TAILORING AND KNITTING AT YAWE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
Clothing and textile production are essential needs in every community. By mastering tailoring and knitting, individuals gain skills that allow them to earn an income, start small businesses, or secure employment in the fashion and textile industry. Many of our trainees join with little to no prior experience. Our training program is structured to take them step-by-step from foundational techniques to producing high-quality garments and knitted items.
Our comprehensive curriculum balances practical garment design with essential business skills:
- Machine Operation & Care: Mastering standard sewing machines, over lockers, and knitting machines, including proper maintenance and safety.
- Pattern Drafting & Cutting: Learning how to take precise measurements, create patterns, and efficiently cut fabrics for various designs.
- Garment Construction: Crafting everyday apparel, school uniforms, ceremonial wear, and custom orders with neat finishes.
- Machine & Hand Knitting: Creating sweaters, cardigans, scarves, and warmth accessories using structured knitting techniques.
- Design & Creativity: Exploring color combinations, fabric selection, and modern fashion trends.
- Business & Product Pricing: Equipping trainees with basic record-keeping, marketing, and pricing strategies to manage a small tailor shop or enterprise.
At YAWE Social Enterprise, we emphasize learning by doing. Every participant works with actual fabrics and machines under the guidance of skilled, patient instructors. In addition to training, our workshop functions as an active production unit. We produce high-quality school uniforms, sweater collections, and custom wear for local institutions and individuals, demonstrating the high standards achieved by our department.
Choosing to learn with or support YAWE Social Enterprise creates a direct social impact. Profits generated through our tailoring and knitting services go directly back into funding YAWE Foundation’s social programs, health initiatives, and community outreach efforts. When a student enrolls or a customer orders garments from us, they are directly contributing to local empowerment and economic growth.
