Bringing Healthcare to the Vulnerable: YAWE Foundation’s Medical Outreach in Katunguru Camp, Kanaara Sub-County, Ntorko

In response to the ongoing challenges faced by internally displaced people in Katunguru Camp, Kanaara Sub-County, YAWE Foundation conducted a life-changing medical outreach on January 31, 2025. The camp, home to over 1,000 flood-affected residents, has struggled with limited access to healthcare, food, and clean water. Recognizing this urgent need, YAWE Foundation, in partnership with Rwangaara HCIII and local district leaders, stepped in to offer free medical services, health education, and screenings.

Addressing Critical Health Needs

A team of 11 medical professionals, in collaboration with Rwangaara HCIII, provided a comprehensive package of health services, including:

  • Health Education: Over 700 people received crucial information on the prevention and control of communicable diseases, STIs, HIV, cervical cancer, and family planning.
  • HIV Testing & Counseling (HTS): 64 individuals were tested, with 2 positive cases identified and linked to treatment at Rwangaara HCIII.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening: 30 women were screened, with one positive case treated through thermo-coagulation and scheduled for follow-up.
  • Family Planning Services: 15 people received injectable contraception, 2 opted for implants, and 4 boxes of condoms were distributed.
  • Blood Pressure & Sugar Monitoring: 86 people had their BP checked, while 12 underwent blood sugar testing, with all findings within normal ranges.
  • Medical Consultations & Treatment: 154 individuals were diagnosed and treated for conditions such as STIs, UTIs, diarrheal diseases, Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD), and neuropathies.

Impact and Achievements

The outreach had a significant impact on the Katunguru community:

✅ Increased awareness of disease prevention and control.
✅ Identified and linked HIV and cervical cancer cases to treatment.
✅ Provided immediate medical care for infections and chronic illnesses.
✅ Strengthened partnerships between YAWE Foundation, Rwangaara HCIII, and district health officials.

Challenges and Future Plans

Despite the outreach’s success, limited time and difficult terrain hindered efforts to reach all in need. As a solution, YAWE Foundation is planning another outreach to ensure the entire population receives adequate care.

Conclusion:
This outreach underscores YAWE Foundation’s commitment to bringing healthcare to vulnerable communities. By working together, we can build a healthier future for all.
